When Are AccessNI Checks Required?
AccessNI checks are commonly used when employers need to confirm whether an applicant’s criminal history may affect their suitability for a role.
These checks are often required where positions involve:
- Safeguarding responsibilities
- Positions of trust
- Work with vulnerable groups
- Regulated public services
- Roles involving financial responsibility or sensitive information
Eligibility for Standard and Enhanced disclosures is defined in legislation and must be based on the duties performed within the role. Employers must ensure that the level of disclosure requested is appropriate and lawful.
AccessNI Checks for Safeguarding Roles
Where roles involve working with children or vulnerable adults, organisations may require Enhanced AccessNI checks.
Enhanced disclosures allow employers to access additional information that may be relevant when assessing suitability for safeguarding roles.
These checks form part of safer recruitment frameworks used across sectors such as healthcare, education, social care and government services.
Ensuring that the correct level of disclosure is requested is an important part of maintaining safeguarding compliance.
Recruiting Across the UK
Organisations operating across the UK must navigate different criminal record disclosure systems depending on where employees are based.
- England and Wales: Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)
- Scotland: Disclosure Scotland

Employers recruiting across multiple jurisdictions often require a combination of DBS, PVG and AccessNI disclosures, depending on where staff are employed.
Organisations operating across the UK can manage DBS checks, PVG disclosures and AccessNI screening through a single digital platform, ensuring consistent oversight across regions.
